I tried a walkthrough twice because I was stuck on the tube. Where today’s titles of the genre take you by the hand and leave hardly any questions unanswered about the further way, Jedi Knight 2 leaves you out in the rain every now and then. If you want to see this clearly, you first play a modern shooter and then deal with this title. Jedi Knight 2 also illustrates the differences in design between today and yesterday.

Maybe one of the decision makers at Disney will come up with the same idea. Many Star Wars games could be technically modernized and would still be a lot of fun today. The only thing missing is the will to do so. I don’t think it would take a lot of money to significantly improve the game in many of these areas. Textures, animations in cutscenes, the AI behavior … Sigh. As well as this can be played in part, the ravages of time gnaw the game. One on the level of Shadow of the Colossus, for example. There’s so much nostalgia in here that while playing I often wished Jedi Knight 2 got a real, elaborate remake. This is pure joy in view of the great implementation of the fights with the lightsaber. Enemies get to feel their reflected blaster shots and you use your powers of power to push your opponents into abysses, to tear their weapons out of their hands or to hurl the lightsaber through the area while it pierces villains standing in the way. It’s so much fun fighting through groups of enemies with the lightsaber blade lit. Okay, first you have to get the annoying snipers on Nar Shaddaa behind you, then Jedi Knight 2 is in top form. Much of it is forgotten after Kyle holds his lightsaber in his hands, and then the fun begins. Which, I would argue, was more because of the confusing AI paths than my skills. Jedi Knight 2 is partly nested, has no overview map and I haven’t died in an FPS as regularly as here for a long time. Have the modern shooters softened me with their well thought-out level design? Well, at least they are often more straightforward in their level structure. In addition, there are sometimes whole masses of storm troops in the initial areas. What doesn’t make things easier are the sparsely distributed items that you use to heal yourself and charge your shields. You’d better forget about the motion controls on the switch. I had fewer problems with the small sticks of the Joy-Cons and the Pro-Controller. It is quite possible that it worked better at the time because I played it with a mouse and keyboard, with the controller it is a challenge every now and then. And depending on how intensely they zigzag around, it’s damn hard to hit them.

Stormtroopers and other alien enemies run like crazy through the area or towards you. I don’t know if my memories of the past are wrong, but today I mainly notice the sometimes strange movements of the AI in the battles. And that makes Kyle refresh his Jedi powers and pick up the lightsaber again. Kyle Katarn and his partner Jan Ors investigate the activities of the remaining Imperial forces a few years after the Battle of Endor and meet a former Jedi from Luke Skywalker’s Academy on Yavin, who has turned to the dark side. It takes a few hours of playing time before that happens. On the one hand, the classic is showing clear signs of age 17 years after its first publication, and on the other hand, it is as beautiful as it was back then to swing the lightsaber. Although in this case there are two different sides of power (to stick with the topic). And at the same time it shows that nostalgia is not always synonymous with beautiful things. To be clear: Don’t expect a technical marvel from Star Wars Jedi Knight 2: Jedi Outcast on Nintendo Switch (and PS4). Star Wars Jedi Knight 2: Jedi Outcast on Nintendo Switch is pure nostalgia with clear signs of age
